Barnett Rc 300 Manual

congratulations, you are the proud owner of the finest production crossbow in the world!

Please follow all safety, assembly and trouble shooting instructions contained in the manual. It is extremely important to read and follow the instructions before attempting to use your crossbow. Serious injuries to yourself or others, damage to your crossbow, or poor performance from your crossbow could result from failure to thoroughly read and understand these instructions. If any part of this manual is unclear to you, contact the Sales Department at 800-237-4507.After assembly of your crossbow, please keep your manual for future reference.

For the Quad 300 Barnett highly recommends using XX75 2219 20” or 22” Carbon arrow with moon nock and125-grainpractice or broadhead. Depending on your state regulations, we recommend using mechanical broadheads, which result in a more consistent flight pattern.

Safety Guidelines

Quad-300

Barnett Quad-300crossbows are equipped with an automatic safety, which engages every time the crossbow is cocked. The safety must be released before each shot. This, as with any other mechanical device, does not guarantee total safety, as no safety device is a substitute for common sense and safe handling. The crossbow trigger is only to be pulled when the safety is in 'fire' position and NEVER when it is in the 'safe' position or anywhere between 'safe' and 'fire.' Do not attempt to alter or modify the safety or the trigger mechanism. If the safety will not release, this happens when the trigger is pulled before the safety switch is released. To correct this, push the trigger pull forward, then release the safety catch.

The following rules should be followed at all times:

EXTREME CAUTION SHOULD BE USED AT ALL TIMES WHEN HANDLING A CROSSBOW. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE RULES COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Always keep your fingers below the flight track and out of the path of cables and strings when firing the crossbow.

Never dry-firethe crossbow (shoot without an arrow).Dry firing will void the warranty and can result in damage to the limb assembly and possibly cause personal injury.

Never fire the crossbow until you are sure of your target.

Always use an adequate target and backstop when target shooting.

Always use suitable crossbow arrows, such as XX75 2219 20” or Barnett’s 22' Carbon Crossbow arrows for the Quad-300with moon nock. Arrows of improper stiffness or mass weight may damage the limb and cable assembly, voiding the warranty and possibly cause personal injury.

Always inspect the crossbow and arrows before firing. Bent or damaged arrows are not safe to fire and should be discarded or repaired.

ASSEMBLY GUIDE

Attaching Prod Housing to Stock

PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY LUBRICATE CABLES (CENTER) WHERE THEY ARE IN CONTACT WITH THE UNDERSIDE OF FLIGHT TRACK.

1.Place the string on top of the flight track while sliding cables into long U-shapedchannel. See Figure 1

2.Push bow limb assembly gently until it engages with the stock.

3.Secure the bow limb assembly to the stock using the 1/4'-20x3/4'screw and washer with the 3/16' hex key. See Figure 2

Fig. 2

Fig.1

Attaching the Foot Stirrup Assembly

1.Attach the foot stirrup assembly to the front of limb housing using the 5/16'- 18x1-1/2'button head screw. Make sure foot stirrup is pushed into foot stirrup block as far as it will gobefore putting the5/16'-18x1-1/2'button head screw into foot stirrup block and attach.

2.Align the foot stirrup assembly to limb housing so that foot claw is positioned on bottom of block. See Figure 3

3. For your own safety, before

Fig.3

each shooting, make sure that

the foot stirrup assembly is fully tightened to the limb housing.

Mounting the Front Sight

1. Install the front sight bracket using the two lock washers and 10-32x3/4'socket head provided. See Figure 4

8

Fig. 7

2. Unscrewing the threaded lock nut from the

pin and inserting it through the side of the Fig. 5 front sight so that the point of the pin is in

the center of the front sight. See Figure 5

3. Replace threaded lock nut on sight pin and tighten.

Mounting the Rear Peep Sight

1.Slide the rear peep sight onto the attached dovetail with setscrew facing the front of the bow.

2.Tighten setscrew when the peep is in the proper eye relief position with the hex key provided. See Figure 6

Fig. 6

Installing an Optional Scope

The recommended crossbow scope is a Barnett 4x32 mm five reticle scope which includes 1” rings to fit a 3/8” dovetail mount.

1.) Remove peep sight from the scope rail.

2.) Position your scope by moving it forward or backward until the proper eye relief is found. This is typically three to four inches from your eye to the eye-piecewhen you are holding the crossbow in a shooting position.

3.) After scope installed you may remove the front sight bracket and pins.

Important: Be sure to tighten scope mount rings before shooting crossbow.

CROSSBOW OPERATION

Cocking your Crossbow

Be sure to apply Barnett lubewax to the center string serving, cables and the flight track area from the string to the trigger area.

1.) Place the foot stirrup on the ground with one foot in the stirrup and the stock resting against your mid section. See Figure 7

2.) Place both hands on the string at each side of the crossbow body no more than ½ inch from crossbow body.

3.) Using even pressure pull the string back until it locks into the trigger mechanism with an

audible “click”. Be sure to apply downward pressure against flight track.

4.) Slowly release hand pressure on the string until you

9

are sure it is locked securely into the trigger mechanism. The crossbow is now cocked with the safety on.

Note: The serving on the string has had a line on each side of the flight surface marked at the factory. After cocking the crossbow make sure that the marks on the string are showing equally on each side of the trigger mechanism. Unevenly cocked crossbows will have erratic arrow flight. When restringing your crossbow mark the serving of the string, on each side of the flight track at rest, where the string leaves the flight surface (track) and apply Barnett Lubewax to the string serving and track surface.

Arrow Retainer

When loaded, the arrow should lie “flat” in the flight grove. The arrow retaining spring should not be twisted to the left or right and should exert only enough pressure on the rear of the arrow to hold it in place. It should not lift the front of the arrow off the flight grove. At this point, the arrow should be lying directly parallel with the flight grove. We recommend the use of Barnett arrows manufactured specifically for your Barnett crossbow.

Loading your Crossbow

1.) Place the arrow forward under the front sight bracket and lay the arrow on the flight surface. When using arrows with moon nocks, be sure that the odd colored fletch is placed in the flight grove and that the concaved nock is parallel to the string.

2.) Slide the arrow back under the arrow retaining spring andfully into the trigger mechanism.Note: The arrow retaining spring should only exert enough pressure to hold the arrow in place without lifting it from its position on the flight surface.

Firing your Crossbow

To fire the arrow from your crossbow:

1.) Point the crossbow in a safe direction.

2.) Slide the safety forward to the off position. The crossbow will now fire when the trigger is pulled. The safety MUST be disengaged in this manner prior to every shot. BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR FINGERS BELOW THE STOCK FORE END (FLIGHT TRACK) WHILE SHOOTING. Note photos below

10

INCORRECT

INCORRECT

CORRECT

CORRECT

This will prevent your hands from being struck by the string as it travels forward. The velocity of the string hitting your fingers will cause severe injury.

Unloading your Crossbow

By far, the easiest way to un-cocka cocked crossbow is to fire an arrow into a target or into the ground away from debris, loose rocks or other people.

Sighting-Inthe Crossbow

Using the rear peep sight and front sight pins:

1.) Place the first sight pin near the top of the front sight bracket.

2.) Shooting at a target from 10 yards, aim for the bulls eye. If the first shot is above the bulls eye, move the pin up (or down if the shot is below the bulls eye).

3.) If the first shot is to the left of the bulls eye, screw the pin to the left (or right if the shot is to the right)

TIP: Move the pin in the direction of the error, follow the arrow. Continue in this manner until you have three consecutive shots into the bulls eye. Repeat this procedure with the other pin, starting near the bottom of the sight bracket. It is recommended that the bottom pin be sighted in to the 30to 35yard range.

11

Arrow Selection and Proper Flight

Due to the unique design of your Barnett crossbow, it is imperative that only specified arrows are used. These arrows are correctly weighted to absorb the high energy generated by the compound design. Lighter arrows simulate a “dryfire” condition and will result in damage to the crossbow VOIDING the warranty. Barnett’s 22” Carbon Arrows or XX75 20” 2219 are correctly “spined”.DRY FIRING WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.

Use Barnett’s 22” Carbon Arrows or 20” 2219 XX75 Arrows with straight, offset or helical fletches with or Moon Nock.

Recommended fixed blade broadheads can be any three blade low profile broadhead with a cutting diameter no larger than 1-3/16”.

When using fixed blade broadheads, the blades must be aligned with the fletches of the arrow. This can be done by placing a rubber o-ringbetween the broadhead and the arrow front insert.

Mechanical broadheads that simulate the flight of a field point may be used where legal.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

Barnett Rc 300 Crossbow Manual

Because of the power of the Barnett Crossbow and the inconsistent properties of wooden shafts, which have a tendency to warp, vary in spine stiffness; density; moisture absorption, all of which result in inaccuracy. Barnett International DOES NOT RECOMMEND their use under any circumstance.

Possible injury could result from shaft breakage, ect., we accept no responsibility or liability arising from the use of wooded shaft arrows.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Arrow Flight

Possibly the greatest variable in accuracy are the arrows. These differ greatly and have totally different fight characteristics. Generally speaking, target arrows are more accurate than hunting arrows. Because of the surface area of the fixed bladed broadheads used in hunting there is a tendency for the arrow to “plane”. To help overcome this we suggest that practice be made well in advance of the hunting season with the type of arrows

12

Fig. 8

you will be using to achieve consistent groupings. Consider the following when selecting arrows; heavy, stiff spined arrows with fletching hold more energy for humane harvesting at reasonable ranges (15-35yards). Lighter arrows are much faster however hold less energy.

1.If the string has been changed was it a Barnett string?

2.Are the arrows straight and fletches (vanes) in good condition?

3.Does the arrow lie flat (true) on the flight groove? Is the arrow retainer to tight or twisted? (Adjust arrow retainer with a pair of needle nose pliers – USE CAUTION)

4.Does the arrow slide smoothly and evenly into the trigger mechanism?

5.When cocking your crossbow, are you pulling equally on each side on each side of the string? (Mark your new strings on each side of the flight track as stated earlier) After cocking the crossbow, make sure the marks are showing evenly on each side of the trigger mechanism.

6.When cocking your crossbow make a conscious effort to hold the string on the flight track so as not to lift over the arrow retainer.

7.Are you putting one fletching down in the flight groove?

8.When using broadheads, line up the blades with the fletches on the arrow (using o-ring).

9.Have you checked the tiller to see if any adjustments should be

made? See Figure 8 Tiller is the measurement between the base of

the limb and the bowstring. The tiller measurement tells you if both limbs are equally stressed. Your bow is in proper tiller when this measurement is the same for both limbs. Uneven tiller will cause erratic arrow flight. All crossbows are accurately tillered at the factory prior to shipping. To adjust the tiller, useFigan.allen3 wrench and measuring tape as shown in the illustration.

String Fraying

1.Are you using Barnett lubewax on the center string serving and cables every 5-10shots and on the flight track when needed?

2.Keep the trigger mechanism and flight surface free of obstruction.

Barnett Rc 300 Crossbow Manual

13

3.Check for metal burrs on the flight track and arrow end caps.

Limbs Weak or Losing Power

1.Has the crossbow been dry fired? (could cause limb to crack).

2.Inspect the limbs for splits or cracks.

3.Are you using Barnett string (the proper length).

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Care of String

The owners kit contains a tube of lube wax that should be applied to the center serving and flight track every 5 – 10 shots. Lube wax should also be applied anywhere the cables make contact with the Teflon tape or flight track every 20 – 30 shots. To extend the life of your cables it is important to apply ARCHERY STRING WAX to all areas of the cables and string every 30 - 50 shots or when white fuzz begins to appear. If the crossbow has been exposed to excessive moisture you may need to apply wax sooner.

PRIOR TO EVERY SHOOTING SESSION, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A COMPLETE CHECK OF CABLES, WHEELS, SCREWS AND ARROWS BE MADE.

Always store your crossbow in a safe, dry place.

Do not expose your crossbow to extreme heat, such as closed, hot vehicles or near heat sources.

Inspect cables and strings for signs of wear. Cables showing wear should be replaced immediately by an authorized service center or the factory.

Periodically put a few drops of quality lightweight machine oil in the trigger mechanism.

Periodically lubricate the eccentric wheel axels with lightweight machine oil.

Keep the flight track and the string serving waxed, reducing friction.

Your prod can be left strung indefinitely although we do not recommend that the bow be left in the cocked position for periods longer than four hours.

With reasonable care of your equipment and diligent practice, your crossbow will remain an accurate, highly efficient hunting weapon.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Which Barnett crossbow is the most popular and why? A:The Revolution and Quad 400 are the most popular.

The Revolution is designed carefully to bring hunting to a new level of performance, comfort and efficiency. The Revolution has150-pounddraw weight. With theVeloci-SpeedCam and Cable System this bow launches arrows at speeds of 345 feet per second. The Revolution also features a 3 1/2“ Adjustable Cheek Piece and 2” Adjustable Rear Stock. The Quick Detach front end sets up and breaks down in seconds with the push of a button. The Quad 400 delivers speed, comfort, looks and value. The Quad 400 has an all new composite stock, vented quad limb assembly coupled with our“Veloci-Speed”high-energycam system, a thumbhole grip and a built in crank cocking device attachment (crank device optional). The Quad 400 also launches arrows at speeds of 345 feet per second.

Q: What is the pull weight/ length of Barnett’s triggers?

A: The trigger assembly incorporates details such as a scope elevation wheel and a 3/8' dovetail mount for scopes. The bow features several other major features as well, such as a breakdown mechanism for storage in hard gun cases for transport; ambidextrousMonte-Carlorifle stock withplunger-styleambidextrous safety switch, precision front sight assembly for permanent range settings (sight pins lock down with allen keys for windage and elevation).

The Revolution trigger mechanism has a precision outer case, molded ofhigh-strengthpolycarbonate material. The interior moving parts are either machined or of high tolerance castings. The pull weight is a mere 4.5 lb. with a 5/16' pull length. This is standard onRevolution XS, Revolution, and Quad 400.

The innovative extended trigger mechanism allows for crossbows designed with extremely long power strokes without causing the bow to become large and unwieldy. This is accomplished through the addition of a transfer bar from the actual trigger pull back to the firing activator. This feature enables the production ofhigh-performancecrossbows that remain compact in stature. The pull weight on this style trigger is approximately 7 lb. with a 1/2' pull length. This is standard on the

Quad 300, RC-150and RX models.

The standard trigger mechanism is a basic,straight-droppull design with the pull located directly beneath the firing activator. It is constructed of mostly stamped hardened steel parts. It has a pull weight of about 7.5 lb. and pull length of 1/2'.

This is standard on the Wildcat’s andRhino Sport Mag.

NOTE: All Barnett trigger mechanisms feature an automatic safety, which is engaged when the bow is cocked and must be released each time firing.

P.O. BOX 934*13447 BYRD DRIVE*ODESSA*FL*33556*PH: 800-237-4507*FAX:813-920-5400

Q: What are the draw weights of Barnett’s bows?

A: All Barnett bows are 150lb except for the Revolution XS, which is 160lb.

Q: Why are Barnett Bows faster if their draw weights are lighter?

A: Speeds are not only derived from the draw weight of the bow. The longer the power stroke, the faster the arrow will travel. This in conjunction with weight and harness assembly – i.e. high energy cams, and synthetic cables and string store more energy than a heavier weight bow with a shorter power stroke.

Q: What is the difference between a compound and a recurve crossbow?

A: The difference between a compound and a recurve crossbow (or any archery bow) is that the compound bow incorporates a set of cams or wheels into the limb assembly. On the recurve bow the string attaches directly to the limbs.

The benefit of the compound bow is that it allows the user the benefit of 'let-off.'(Let-offis a term used to describe the reduction in draw weight by percentage when the wheels roll over from the action of drawing the string.) A compound bow will'let-off'about 33% on current models from a150-lbdraw weight to 75 lbs. when the wheels roll over. Not only is it easier for the user to cock a compound crossbow, but also it is less mechanical stress on the trigger mechanism.

Q: What are the Synthetic Strings made of?

A: TheVeloci-Speedharness uses a string made of Dyna Flight 97, theend-loopsand center serving are made of 150 lb. Tensile strength braided fast flight.

Q: How do I replace a string on a recurve bow?

A: Using the old string follow the same procedure that you would use when using the cable stringer. Cock the old string. Make sure the safety is on. Insert the new bowstring loops through the loops of the old string and seat over the nockends. Check loops on the bowstring and new string for proper seating on the nockends. Grasp new stringvery tightly while pulling upwards with one hand. Release safety and pull trigger with other hand. You then lower string very slowly. Take off the old string and you are done.

Q: How do I replace a string on a compound crossbow?

A: A bow press is required to change the string onSynthetic Cable Systems.

Q: How long should strings last?

A: With proper maintenance of the string and the crossbow itself, the string should last a minimum of 100 shots, with several hundred shots not uncommon. Proper maintenance includes applying lubricant to the area where the string touches the flight track, keeping the flight track surface area free of nicks, gouges, burrs, dirt, debris, etc.

Q: What do I do to extend the life of my bows synthetic system?

A: Your owner’s kit contains a tube of lube wax, which should be applied to the center serving of the string and flight track every 5 to 10 shots. Lube wax should also be applied anywhere the cables make contact with the cable slide or Teflon tape, whichever is applicable, every 20 to 30 shots. To

P.O. BOX 934*13447 BYRD DRIVE*ODESSA*FL*33556*PH: 800-237-4507*FAX:813-920-5400

extend the life of your cables it is important to apply ARCHERY STRING WAX to all non-servedareas of the cables and string every 30 to 50 shots or when white fuzz begins to appear. If the crossbow has been exposed to excessive moisture you may need to apply wax sooner.

Q: How long can I keep my bow cocked?

A: It is safe to keep your bow cocked while you are hunting in a stationary position. FOR PERSONAL SAFETY REASONS, DO NOT STALK OR WALK TO AND FROM YOUR STAND WITH YOUR BOW COCKED. We do recommend that if you break from your hunt that you let the bow down to theun-cockedposition by shooting a target arrow into a safe backstop. It would be good practice to let the bow down every 4 hours relax it for about ½ hour.

Q: Why does my bow shoot to the right or to the left?

A: This question can be answered as simply as checking to see if the bow is being cocked off center. If the string is cocked off center to the left or right, the arrow will shoot off to the left or right. The string being off center by as little as 1/8' could result in the shot being off several inches down range. To remedy this, put a mark on the string's center serving where it crosses over the flight track when the bow is not cocked. When you cock the bow to shoot again, make it a priority to have the string's marks centered in the trigger mechanism. If it is cocked and still off center, grasp the string and nudge it into the centered position, with the safety still engaged.

The other problem may be slightly more technical. Your bow could be out of till (out of square). If you have made any adjustments to the limb bolts (the bolts that secure the limbs onto the bow) this is a possibility. Measure from the point where the limb meets the prod housing back to the string.

Do this on each side of the prod housing. If the measurement is not equal then the bow is out of till. It would be best to have a dealer make the till adjustment to correct the problem. All Barnett Compound Crossbows are pre-setfor tiller and proper draw weight at the factory.

Q: Why does my bow shoot high or low?

A: If you are using field points, you can simply adjust the sights to correct the problem. Also check that all of your arrows are the same length and shaft size (i.e., 20' - 2219 with 125 grain field tip).

If you are using broad heads, you may be experiencing planing, which means that the blades of the broad head catch air as they fly. This problem is only correctable by using a different type or brand of broad head.

Q: What kind of broad heads should I use and what are the recommended grain weights? A:The following recommendations are based on results of field-testing by our Service Department. Various broad heads were used on our crossbows, shooting at 30' on an outdoor range.

Spitfire by New Archery Products:3-blademechanical broad head with a1-1/2'cutting diameter, 125 grain.

HI-TechCam-Lok by WASP:3-bladebroad head with a1-3/16'cutting diameter, 125 grain, used withO-ring.

P.O. BOX 934*13447 BYRD DRIVE*ODESSA*FL*33556*PH: 800-237-4507*FAX:813-920-5400

Cam-Lok by WASP:3-bladebroad head with a1-1/16'cutting diameter, 130 grain, used with O- ring.

Muzzy by Muzzy Products: 3-bladebroad head with a1-3/16'cutting diameter, 125 grain, used withO-ring.

The following broad heads are recommended for use on crossbows requiring a 16' 2117 bolt: Spitfire by New Archery Products:3-blademechanical broad head with a1-1/2'cutting diameter, 125 grain.

Jack Hammer by WASP:3-blademechanical broad head with a1-3/4'cutting diameter, 125 grain.Ventilator by Satellite Archery:3-blademechanical broad head with a1-3/4'cutting diameter, 125 grain.

Cam-Lok by WASP:3-bladebroad head with a1-1/16'cutting diameter, 130 grain, used with O- ring.

TriLok by Game Tracker:3-bladebroad head with a1-3/16'cutting diameter, 125 grain, used withO-ring.

Q: Why are some 3-blade broad heads inaccurate?

A: The design of some3-bladebroad heads is not conducive to accurate shooting with a crossbow. Some broad heads have extremely large surface area, blade shape, or other design characteristics that, when used on an arrow shaft of 20' or less, will not fly well.

The shorter the arrow you are shooting, the more difficult it is to get extremely tight groups with some broad heads. If the heads have too much surface area or a very large cutting diameter, they will plane easily from catching air in flight.

Q: What type of arrows should I use with my crossbow?
