This document contains the following sections:
Product Features
The QLogic SANbox 5600 and 5602 FC switches are 4-Gbit Fibre Channel switches that offer low price per port connectivity. The base QLogic SANbox 5600 and 5602 FC switch has the following ports:
- Eight 4-Gbit ports enabled initially
- Capability to add ports in 4-port increments up to a maximum of 20 ports
- Four 10-Gbit ISL ports
- Capability to move a currently licensed port to another port. This allows the activation of up to all four 10-Gbit ISL ports with only an eight port license.
Note - The capability to move a licensed port to another port requires firmware version 6.7.0.07 (minimum) and Enterprise Fabric Suite (EFS) version 6.07.05 (minimum). |
Additional QLogic 560x FC switches can be stacked together by using the QLogic SANbox 5600 and 5602 FC switch 10-Gbit ISL ports. QLogic 5200 FC switches can also be included in the stack. Thus, a total of six QLogic 5200 and 560x FC switches can be stacked together to create a maximum of 96 2-Gbit or 4-Gbit ports. (For switch stacking details, refer to the QLogic documentation listed in Related Documentation.)
Switch Requirements
This section describes some special requirements for the QLogic SANbox 5600 and 5602 FC switches. The following topics are discussed:
Shipping or Moving a Rackmounted QLogic 5600 FC Switch
When mounting the QLogic SANbox 5600 FC switch in the equipment rack, you must use the accessory mounting L-brackets supplied with the switch.
Caution - The supplied mounting L-brackets are not approved for moving or shipping a QLogic SANbox 5600 FC switch installed in an equipment rack. The brackets cannot sustain impacts and vibration associated with equipment relocation. |
To move or ship a rack with a QLogic SANbox 5600 FC switch mounted in the rack you must do one of the following:
- Remove the switch from the rack
- Use rack mounting kit SG-XSWQLG5200-RK-Z, which is designed for shipping the rack with the switch installed.
Shipping or Moving a Rackmounted QLogic 5602 FC Switch
To move or ship a rack with a QLogic SANbox 5602 FC switch mounted in the rack, you must do one of the following:
- Remove the switch from the rack
- Use rack mounting kit SG-XSWQLG5200-RK-Z, which is designed for shipping the rack with the switch installed.
Firmware Requirements
For complete feature functionality, upgrade the SANbox 5600 or 5602 FC switch to the minimum required firmware version 6.7.0.07. Features of this version include:
- Support for EFS
- Support for stacking of six switches
- Ability to move port licenses
The latest firmware patch ID for this version is 128175-01. See the section Downloading and Installing Patches for further information regarding the installation of this patch.
Installing the Switch Into an Existing Fabric
If you are installing a QLogic SANbox 5600 and 5602 FC switch into an existing fabric that has a QLogic switch or a Sun StorEdge Network FC switch, you must do the following:
1. Remove all 1-Gbit QLogic and Sun StorEdge Network 1-Gbit FC switches from the fabric.
2. Upgrade any QLogic or Sun StorEdge Network 2-Gbit FC switches to the minimum firmware version 5.0.1.10. The patch ID for this firmware is 119553. See the section Downloading and Installing Patches for further information regarding the installation of patches.

History[edit]
QLogic was created in 1992 after being spun off by Emulex. QLogic's original business was disk controllers. This business was sold to Marvell Technology Group in 2005. QLogic had its initial public offering in 1994 and was traded on NASDAQ under the symbol QLGC.Originally located in a Costa Mesa, California building adjacent to Emulex, it competed against its parent company in the market for Fibre Channel controllers for storage area networks.[3]
QLogic acquired companies including NetXen.Integrated circuit designer Silicon Design Resources Inc. based in Austin, Texas, was acquired for about $2 million in 1998.[4]In May 2000, QLogic acquired Fibre Channel switch maker Ancor Communications for about $1.7 billion in stock.[5]Little Mountain Group, founded in 1999 and developer of iSCSI technology, was acquired in January 2001 for about $30 million.[6]The compiler company PathScale was acquired for about $109 million in February 2006.[7]Silverstorm Technologies, which designed InfiniBand products, was acquired in October 2006 for about $60 million.[8]After attempting to use PathScale for cluster computing over InfiniBand, the compiler business was sold to SiCortex in August 2006.[9]
QLogic was led by chairman H.K. Desai from 1996, who became executive chairman in 2010 until his death in June 2014.[10]In 2012, the InfiniBand products were sold to Intel for $125 million.[11]Simon Biddiscombe became chief executive in November 2010, until resigning in May 2013 after two years of falling revenue.[12][1]Prasad Rampalli became chief executive a few months later, until August 2015.Jean Hu became acting CEO again at that time.[13]
QLogic announced it was being acquired by Cavium in June 2016, for about $1 billion over its balance sheet cash.[14]After the deal closed in August 2016, job cuts were announced.[15]It announced it would move to Irvine, California in 2017.[2]
Products[edit]
The company makes a range of networking products for storage and converged networks. Storage networking products include Fibre Channel caching adapters, Fibre Channel adapters, iSCSI adapters and Fibre Channel switches. Converged network products include Converged Network Adapters and Intelligent Ethernet Adapters.
Acquisitions[edit]
- 2005: Acquired Troika Networks and storage virtualization products
- 2009: Acquired NetXen and Intelligent Ethernet Adapter products
- 2014: Signed a broad technology alliance agreement with Brocade Communications Systems and acquired its fibre channel and converged network adapter business
